I was stopped again and the officer was extremely nice, he said I have no criminal record and to just get it cleared up as soon as possible. That was about 2 years ago. It's still not cleared up. What's going to happen if I get stopped now. The first officer told me she could have me towed and take my plates. Is this true ? Any advice at all ?

The bottom line is, if you have an expired sticker, you can and probably will continue to get stopped and charged. It's unlikely that you would be towed for that offence.

I think the biggest issue would be increased insurance premiums. While it's not considered a serious offence, two convictions will typically result in increased rates. As well, if the police continually catch you driving without a valid plate, they can summons you to Court and request an increased fine.

I am in that boat too, although a far smaller amount. (visited the JP with all the forms etc.to get extensions). So I am past that option. Could you explain how to pay off one or two at at time? After a fewf ticket's come a part 3 summons. This usually increases the fine a lot as your past history is admitted. I did this and the guy got a 1000 fine. If you want to take it to the extreme after a few Part 3 summons repetition of the offense becomes a valid issue and you are arrested and held for court. The vehicle is then seized under hta 217. The vehicle can then be ordered impounded by the JP. I have done this for driving under suspension. That is the incentive GS

OK can I ask you guys this ? My son who is now 17 and I used to take road trip back home to Nova Scotia every summer. We did from 2000 right until 2009 when my sticker expired. We loved it, we would take our time, stop in hotels etc etc. It's been a highlight of our times together. We haven't been home since 2009 and it's breaking my heart. My son is missing his family down there and of course I'm missing them. If I were to drive with an expired sticker can the police in NS do anything ?

I imagine all Provinces would have laws requiring motor vehicles to have valid permits. The law in Ontario applies to all vehicles, even those with non Ontario plates/registrations.

They sure can. So can the cops in Quebec. If you go through the US, be forewarned that driving with expired plates in some states is an arrestable offence, even if "you ain't from 'round here."
