Re: Charge Withdrawn - Success story
The speedometer on my Escape is "calibrated" (by me :D ) at 100 km/h because I pulled the needle off and placed it exactly on the line. It's slightly off at other speeds but nothing to be worried about - when it says 50 km/h I'm actually going 52. Our new Buick Regal has a digital speedometer which is almost dead on - when it reads 100 km/h I'm ...

Re: Calibration discrepancy or sloppy writing - viable defen
Without any context, I would definitely think 60 at first glance. But if you look carefully, there is an extra stroke at the top of the first digit, almost making the 0 look like an 8. Also, notice how straight the horizontal stroke is - most people would not pause on the loop of a 6 in order to straighten out the top.

Re: Bike Lanes Ticket in NYC
Also think this would be a bylaw thing, not HTA. In Toronto this would be an offence:
A. Subject to § 886-11, no person shall operate a vehicle other than a bicycle in any
bicycle lane except for the purpose of:
(1) Ingress to or egress from a private lane or driveway adjacent to the bicycle
lane;
(2) Making a turn at a highway intersecting ...

Re: Maintenance of commercial vehicle, DIY?
I've already told them that I won't be doing anything, basically, that might end up with a wheel falling off or losing brakes on the highway - they can pay for that stuff to be done. But I can save them labour costs in engine/transmission maintenance, electrical repairs, and other stuff that would otherwise need a mechanic to fix. I wasn't sure if ...

Maintenance of commercial vehicle, DIY?
Is there a requirement for commercial vehicles to be maintained only by licensed mechanics (e.g., oil changes, tire rotations)? I'm working with Habitat for Humanity and we are looking into a cargo van for the ReStore; I'm more than capable of doing maintenance but I'm not sure if it is legal because I am not a licensed mechanic.

I agree that an opinion should not be enough for a conviction, but that doesn't necessarily require a hard set decibel limit. It's like our tint laws - no quantitative limit but you need to articulate why, in that situation, the coating substantially obscured the driver's view or the view of the interior. As far as I know, it's not enough to just ...

Does the "Valid with photo ID only" sticker make any difference in this case? I'm not sure if it can be argued that the sticker voids the plastic so that it is no longer a valid driver's licence - since the sticker is so easily torn off.

I'm pretty sure it says "BLK" on the ticket. "BL" is before the box on the ticket, and what looks like "le" in the box is actually a wide "K" where the pen did not lift completely to make the second stroke.

I'm pretty sure the clock starts the moment you get your G1. I have always had a G licence which indicated that I could accompany a G1 driver. In fact, I think this year is the fourth year of my G, but I have licences going back to 2007 that have the red bar under my photo.

Probably just curved it in anticipation of the closed parenthesis coming up. I'll do that sometimes when writing quickly. It's a very minor error, if at all; it won't affect the ticket.

Are you trying to argue that the first two cars were speeding as well and should have been stopped first, therefore you would have slipped through the net? That won't fly at all.

That is the correct wording for a charge under HTA 62(1). You can look it up under O.Reg 950. "Drive without proper headlights — motor vehicle"

I think this law is more to allow arrow indications to be used for controlling the direction of traffic, such as at a highway off-ramp that might have left and right arrow indications but no forward arrow indication, or an intersection with no turns that might show only the forward arrow indication. Instead of having signs to prohibit each illegal ...

The whole of the HTA is available to anyone with internet access from home or a library. There's nothing that says you can only read the Driver's Handbook before a road test.
If the left-turn arrow is not on, you can turn right on a red after coming to a stop and determining the turn can be made in safety. When a green arrow indication is shown ...

Re: Failing to drive in a marked lane - Case law
That exception only applies where the vehicle being passed is intending to turn left. On a divided highway, the only time that would really apply is when a vehicle is merging left with the tail end sticking out. Then you could take the shoulder to pass that vehicle and proceed farther up the merge lane.

You still have passing off roadway, HTA 150 (2). The definition of "roadway" specifically excludes the shoulder.

As far as the Compulsory Automobile Insurance Act goes, you're okay as long as you don't drive it. Obviously, if vandals or mother nature hit it, you're not covered. Not sure about the lease agreement requirements as I've never leased a vehicle before.

Legal and moral obligation.
Report it to a collision reporting centre, or, if you don't have one, your local detachment/police station. With all those witnesses, someone probably has your plate. If the other driver already reported it, chances are you will be put in contact with each other to see if you can resolve it mutually. It's a much better ...

I think it's more to prevent people from using it as a turn lane and holding the bus up. These are almost always for those bus stops that lead into an intersection. I've never seen anyone parked in one of those, but I had seen buses honking away at turning cars before the "BUS ONLY" lines were painted because the cars had to wait for traffic and ...

I'm asking because, aside from personal curiosity, the OP mentioned that the extra space was for a bus stop. Some of those, especially in Mississauga and some other areas, are painted with a solid white line with the words "BUS ONLY". I'm guessing this is backed up in the city bylaws.

Can you use lanes designated for specific traffic (bus only, right turn only, bicycle only, etc) in order to pass? Section 150 doesn't really specify how you pass the vehicle in terms of marked lanes.Stanton wrote:As for the vehicle that passed the school bus on the right, that is legal since the bus was signalling to turn left.

They should include towtruck operators in this law. It must be pretty scary hitching a vehicle while cars are zooming past you going 80 - 120 km/hour .
