Re: Cyclist door-ed by a cab, and then given a ticket
Lane splitting is legal as far as I know. I've never found a law against it. If you're an idiot about it then it could lead to other charges like careless driving, but the act itself appears to be legal.

Re: Received Speeding Ticket After Parking and Exiting Vehic
As long as the offence occurred on a public road governed by the HTA, a ticket may be given. I believe the officer has 30 days to give you a ticket and six months to issue you a summons.

Re: License Plate cover - OPP / Police in General
Last I heard, MTO has a five year warranty on issued plates covering manufacturing defects (faded paint, premature rust, etc.). I can't find this listed on their website.
but I don't buy that clear covers make things harder to see.
Some do, some don't. I don't know if it's due to weather conditions or age or material quality, but some ...

Re: License Plate cover - OPP / Police in General
It's worth a shot to bring your plate cover to show the prosecutor that you've removed it. Offer to snap it in half in front of him. :D
As for clear plate covers, I know I have a heck of a time reading some of the plates behind those, especially if they're dirty. Close up, they look normal, but when you're trying to read from a moving vehicle, the ...

Re: Disobey Sign - Nov 5, 2011 Yonge and Harbour St. Toronto
I only see one black-and-white sign designating the left lane as a turn lane only. The OP used the centre lane which is not designated by any enforceable sign, as far as I can tell. Only a painted arrow within the lane itself.

Re: Disobey Sign - Nov 5, 2011 Yonge and Harbour St. Toronto
Does the intersection still look as Google Street View has it, i.e., no actual black and white signs to designate lane usage? If so, you might be able to beat the charge as there were in fact no signs to disobey.

Re: Disobey Sign - Nov 5, 2011 Yonge and Harbour St. Toronto
Okay, I get what happened. Seems like a language or logic issue. You thought you were "continuing" onto Yonge, where in fact you could only exit onto Yonge as Harbour continues to Lake Shore. This is what the yellow sign means when it says "Left lane exits" - you are in that lane to exit onto Yonge. You then made what is basically an improper left ...

Re: Disobey Sign - Nov 5, 2011 Yonge and Harbour St. Toronto
I don't understand what you did. "Continuing forward" would put you onto Lake Shore, you can't continue forward onto Yonge St because that is perpendicular to Harbour St. Did you make a left turn onto Yonge from the centre lane? Or did you continue forward onto Lake Shore and get a ticket for doing that?

Re: The Fast Lane
I'd say it's reasonable to help those vehicles that can't easily get up to speed, like tractor trailers, campers, fully loaded pickups, boat trailers, etc. I also try to move over for a long queue of merging vehicles whenever I can, but sometimes doing so would cause congestion in the centre lane so I try to maintain my speed as much as I can and ...

Re: The Fast Lane
Here's a good one. Not the left lane, but that lane was moving at a faster pace than I felt comfortable with in the rain. Driving down the 400, I see hazard lights up ahead on a slow-moving vehicle. No problem, once I pass this centre-lane bandit of a white Cherokee, I'll move over and pass. Nope! (Chuck Testa) The VW mirrors my lane change for no ...

In my opinion, it is a violation of HTA 148(2) if a driver does not move right when overtaken by another vehicle - regardless of vehicle speed.

Re: Drive hand held communication device
Out of 7000+ vehicles where I was specifically watching for distracted drivers, I didn't see a single texter with a device mounted to the vehicle or placed securely within. I would not count the cupholder as secure, as the device will flop around in it. I use a stand on an anti-slip mat and I would consider that to be the bare minimum. I did see ...

Caught a doozy recently. It might take a few views to figure out which car to watch for, but at the beginning of the video, there is a red pickup off in the distance that pulls out in front of what looks like a white Ford Edge. Watch what it does.

Re: first speeding ticket
With a 5-over ticket and a spotless record (up to now), I think most insurers will forgive it. I was able to get two minor speeding tickets before the age of 22 and my insurer forgave both with no rate increase (although I did get a phone call on the second one that warned me not to get a third). My opinion, unless there is a fatal error on the ...

The exemption for pressing buttons on a communications device requires that the device be placed securely in or mounted in the vehicle so that it does not move while the vehicle is in motion. It can't be in your hands.

Re: Cellphone ticket while looking for address
On the shoulder would be off the roadway, so that meets condition 1. You would be unlawfully parked if, say, you pulled to the side of a busy four-lane city street and claimed you weren't moving while using your cell phone. That would violate conditions 1 and 3. You are also "unlawfully parked" if you try to use your cell phone while stopped at a ...

Re: Cellphone ticket while looking for address
I did distracted driver counts for OPP a few months ago, and as far as coffee went I drew the line at whether or not they used the cup holder. If they took a sip and placed it back, that was fine. Those who were holding the cup and steering with one hand (or with the coffee cup pressed against the steering wheel) were recorded as a distracted ...

Just a few points:
1) If your mother doesn't speak any English, you will need to notify the Court ahead of time so that an interpreter can be present. You (or your family) are not allowed to translate for her since you could be considered bias.
2) Don't make the mistake of addressing the officer's attitude during the trial, it's irrelevant to ...

Re: paid ticket 3 days late, will my license be suspended?
I think Toronto's Diamond Lanes were around before HOV lanes existed in Ontario. I remember those being just the taxi/bus/bike lanes before the "3 or more persons" signs were added in the mid-90s. That's why Toronto has its own "HOV lane" bylaw.
