There have been court decisions that deemed driving to be a "near right" - that is, you are entitled to use public highways subject to legislation passed in the interest of public safety (this includes the licensing system). As far as I'm aware, none of those decisions have come from the Supreme Court of Canada and several recent case law I have ...

:D Thanks guys. There was a family health emergency that I had to go help with, then I got pretty busy with Habitat for Humanity and the OPP volunteer work. Does the province even send unpaid fines to a collection agency? I would have thought they'd just suspend your licence and wait for you to find them.

A Road Occupancy Permit seems to be a municipal by-law requirement, not provincial. My first search turned up Richmond Hill's requirements. Putting in Caledon got me this:

Where is that congestion from? That may be why the sign is there. If Shaw is becoming congested between 7-9 AM, southbound traffic approaching Dundas essenially only has a single lane; while right-turning vehicles can squeeze past, a car waiting to proceed straight onto Shaw would have to wait there (don't block the box!) and block both straight ...

You should NEVER have more traction in the front than the rear, regardless of where your drive wheels are. Of course, the best solution will be to get four winter tires for the season, then four new, matched tires to replace the worn out summers (all-seasons do not exist in Canada).

Same here (not the tow truck driving, but the simple pulls). No unibodies and no all-season tires. Hard to hook up properly to a unibody as I do not carry that J/T/R-hook cluster, and the all-season guys are on their own as far as I'm concerned. Normally I only hook up if there is a clearly accessible attachment point. Only time I might consider ...

They might let it go if you have a clear cover, but the optics may be messed up if you have a cover that doubles as the lens to direct light.
Then again, I see too many cars with one headlight pointed into oblivion (i.e., my eyes!), so it may not be a big deal.

Ooo, tricky. The Escape slows at roughly the same rate when I gear down (turn off O/D) as the Lancer does simply by going completely off the gas, though I would say that neither qualify as "sudden".
Manual transmission cars can engine brake much more effectively, so I guess that should be avoided in traffic. Saves gas in the newer cars though. :D ...

You may have the GPS screen visible to you if you are not holding it (e.g., mounted somewhere). If possible, don't mount it on your windshield - it's rare, but you could get a "windshield obstructed" ticket.

Re: Legal requirement to report accident to Insurer?
A hit-and-run accident with no suspect counts as a claim against your comprehensive coverage and will affect your rates. Any claim where you are ruled 0% at-fault will go under DCPD coverage and does not affect your rate. In RI's case, insurance would have covered under DCPD if he had witnessed the collision, taken down the plate, and filed a ...

I gear down to slow on an incline or when I just want to adjust my speed (e.g., passed a car at 100 km/h and want to slow down to 80 km/h before Bear pops out of the woods). Re: Rules to over take street car?
The HTA states that you must stop two metres behind the doors of a streetcar which is "stationary for the purpose of taking on or discharging passengers". An open door is a good indication of that, but I would also argue that a streetcar stopped in front of a TTC streetcar sign is also a good indication that passengers are being let on and let off ...

Re: Rules to over take street car?
The question is whether it would be reasonable to assume from the position of the streetcar that it was stopping to pick up or let off passengers, instead of simply waiting for a red light. Most streetcar stops seem to be 1-2 car lengths from the stop line instead of 4-5. It sounds like this streetcar was stopped away from the TTC sign and wanted ...
