Re: Ban the Cell Phones Law

Most of the aural warnings on fighter jets are a woman's voice. They call her "Bitching Betty." I'm not kidding, either. Maybe cars should come equipped with that... but I'm sure some people, if they get a warning such as: "Caution - moose ahead" they'd try to figure out how to shut the thing off as they slam into the moose.

Our old 1987 Nissan ...

Re: Ban the Cell Phones Law

'Attentional blindness' for talking on a cell phone, 'cognitive capture' for texting while driving. I'm not sure why talking with a passenger is different, but maybe it has to do with the fact that we have to make the extra connection that we are talking to a person instead of the phone. I have heard the 'passenger can shut up when conditions ...

Re: Ban the Cell Phones Law

Yeah, the headset leaves both hands free, I find that I am equally distracted by just the phone conversation. I lose track of many details that I would otherwise know - how many cars are behind me and their colours, what gear I am in, my speed, and even upcoming turns and the colour of traffic signals (although instinct tells me to stop on a red ...

Re: Interesting article about court appearances. Opinions?

Hahaha, hilarious last few posts. I've heard the parking lights "are CITY lights!" argument before. What I don't get is the amount of Caravans using the amber marker DRLs at night with no headlights at all. They have to know that their headlights aren't on...right? :?

I've had arguments before with people who insist that they don't have to worry ...

Re: Interesting article about court appearances. Opinions?

Anyways our low speed limit is making lane discipline hell.

Lane discipline has little to do with our speed limit - it's the lack of laws and lack of enforcement, along with a general selfish driving attitude from major urban areas like Toronto, Mississauga, Brampton, etc., that is spreading like a cancer. When I first learned to drive ...

Re: Interesting article about court appearances. Opinions?

If the average vehicle speed increases by very little, then shouldn't the collision stats be affected by an equally small amount?

It sounds as if going to a 110 km/h had little effect on driving speeds; it just brought more drivers into compliance with the law.

Re: Seats in back of Pickup

section 178 does not apply at all, that would be for someone on a bicycle, hanging onto the corner of a vehicle.

Isn't that 178 (1)?
"A person riding upon a motor assisted bicycle, a bicycle, a coaster, roller skates, skis, a toboggan, a sled or a toy vehicle shall not attach it, them, himself or herself to a vehicle or street car on a roadway ...

IIHS! Okay, I'll have to erase that study from my memory banks.
Overall, raising the posted speed limit has had a lesser effect on driver speeds than anticipated.
I like the sound of that. Has Ontario done any similar studies or pilot projects?

Re: Seats in back of Pickup

I can't find anything specifically addressing the act in the HTA, but 178 (4) prohibits persons on the outside of a vehicle for the purpose of being "drawn along the roadway". At first I thought it might be referring to people on rollerskates, sleds, etc., but 178 (1) specifically covers those situations. "Drawn along the roadway" likely means ...

Re: Interesting article about court appearances. Opinions?

Squishy no.

That 100 km/hr limit is not the most effecient speed for everyone.

A 6 cylinder ford explorer and a v8 corvette will both have a "most effecient speed".

No two engines are the same, neither is the car, the weight, etc.

Regardless of what you guys say we could have no speed limit it wont mean everyone is gonna go wild.

Most people ...

Re: Bad Drivers?

I know 'bear, normal speed of traffic means the speed limit, but still.....we need a rewrite.

I agree we need a rewrite. Something like "Fail to drive in right hand lane, except while actively passing" or "Driver failing to move right for motor vehicle approaching from rear at greater speed"

You should schedule a meeting with Mr. Fantino. :D ...

Re: Bad Drivers?

I always thought "normal speed of traffic" meant the flow of traffic. That way, you don't have to keep right during a traffic jam, as the "normal" speed could be 50 km/h under the limit by now. The same way, it should apply to traffic flow above the speed limit.

Re: Interesting article about court appearances. Opinions?

For me, that's a whole other issue. I don't agree with the system in place in some of the States, because of exactly what you mention. A death penalty should be reserved for cases with irrefutable evidence like the entire act caught on videotape or witnessed by a group of officers. Otherwise, save it for certain offences for repeat offenders (e.g ...

Or adopt China's one-child policy (or two-child, since we're not running out of room yet). Lower population densities generally lead to better consideration for others. Monkeyspheres and all that.

Re: Interesting article about court appearances. Opinions?

Not officially, although Harper did change policy to stop seeking clemency for Canadians facing the death penalty on foreign soil. I think it's still way too much of a touchy subject for them to consider bringing back the death penalty in Canada. Does your post mean you won't be voting Conservative?

Re: Interesting article about court appearances. Opinions?

You don't know that traffic won't flow well at 100 km/h, because traffic never flows at that speed unless forced to by an obstruction ahead. I have been in heavily enforced areas of New York State where interstate traffic flows well at around 110 km/h, including the occasional out-of-state RV doing 90 km/h.

We have no lane discipline because it's ...

Re: Interesting article about court appearances. Opinions?

Speeding is not a criminal act per se . (edit: I'm not using that in the legal definition. I don't even know how to use that in the legal definition.)

What incentive does the MTO have to change the speed limit? Traffic flows above the limit; things just "work". Get everyone to follow the limit, and maybe we'll have traffic backlogs in urban areas ...

Re: Crown Vics/Chargers/Tahoe's

The OPP doesn't get at least a few 4x4 Tahoes? It still uses P-metric tires, so winter tires are available - put those two together and you have a great cruiser for bad winter conditions. I'm not saying the OPP should try to pull cars out of ditches, but outside of a city, there are just some roads where a 4x2 can't go. (And I've been stuck in one ...

Re: Suspicious car on the street

I considered the PI angle, but I figured a PI wouldn't leave the headlights on all the time (unless running computer equipment?). It's also a Mercedes SUV, a bit flashy for a "surveillance vehicle".

I think their local Peel office moved a few years ago; I'll find out where they went and have her give them a call. Thanks.

Suspicious car on the street

I was at my parents' house in Mississauga early this week, and my mother told me about this SUV which always parks down the street for four to six hours a day, headlights on and the occupants inside. When she takes her afternoon walk, she will usually see a man and a woman inside smoking or eating. They have also been littering on the grass next to ...

Re: 142km on 401 going west, near 401 exit to Homer Watson Blvd

42 km/h over the limit is still a minor conviction, and I think most insurance companies will forgive one or two of those. I was with Motors Insurance (GMAC) and they forgave two minor convictions I got when I was 16 and 18, while FiReSTaRT had his rates increased.

We don't have a 400-series nearby, but my G2 Exit did include a stretch of HWY 11 (where the limit is 100). The ramps seem a little shorter, too - I caught a smile on the tester's face when I went to WOT. 8)

If the MTO says stay in the right hand lane, which makes more sense than the centre, I will start doing that from now on in 3 lane or more, instead of centre.

As I said, I always found that rule weird.

You know what, I want to thank you for being willing to change. I have a lot of respect for truckers, and I think it shows in your attitude ...
