Chased by an Escort then attacked by Santa, what a day.

Then he'll sue me for mental anguish.

Re: NA's safest vs. most unsafe roads

I guess you can't be too friendly or else really poor drivers will manage to function on the roads until they really screw up.

Re: passing over solid lines

I also find no laws stating that it is illegal to pass near or within an intersection or crosswalk, although signs can be erected by by-law making it illegal. Changing lanes seems to be legal in all three areas as long as you follow standard lane-changing laws. Passing near a hill or railway crossing is illegal only when there are no marked lanes ...

Re: question about bicycle on crosswalk

As you were in a crosswalk/intersection with a traffic control signal, Section 144 applies. When riding a bike, you are considered a vehicle instead of a pedestrian. Drivers are to yield to traffic lawfully using an intersection, which you were not - 144 (29) prohibits riding within a crosswalk.

I think all the driver needs to do is establish that ...

:D I didn't think of it that way. I knew he would be looking at around 10k a year post-conviction, maybe more if he's on the younger end of 20, but didn't really consider that he would be buying a new Escort every four months or so. Bahahaha

At this point I'm actually hoping to be asked to testify in court, for the experience and to see what kind ...

Re: passing over solid lines

When "trusting" the dashed centre lines, I consider where they end to be at most the spot where I expect to be able to merge back in. I agree - some of them are so close to hills that I would be over the crest in opposing lanes if I decided to start a pass just before dashed turns to solid.

Things change in Quebec, though. As far as I know, you do ...

Re: NA's safest vs. most unsafe roads

Do those states use salt in the winter? Could be a combination of being able to keep older cars along with bad winter conditions (I think some areas of Montana get pretty big snowfalls). Road design obviously plays a factor, but I'm not familiar with any of those states so can't comment.

Re: passing over solid lines

30 m is listed for crossing the centre line near a bridge, viaduct, or tunnel, as well as making U-turns near a railway crossing. No distance for crossing the centre line near a curve or grade, just that the driver's view cannot be obscured so as to create a potential hazard. 150 m is for making U-turns near a curve, grade, or bridge/viaduct/tunnel.

Re: passing over solid lines

Where a solid line forms a shoulder (including the triangles near on- or off-ramps) it would be "passing off roadway" or "driving on paved shoulder".

Re: Toronto Fire Service driving to a call

Nice driving!

Water flow at track level? We always had water down there in some sections...I guess the alarm is for when the water level nears the power rail, maybe. Would almost take a flood to do that.

Underground rivers are above a lot of the tunnels, especially the Sheppard line, I think. Also some of that "water" wasn't really, uh, water ...

It was on the 401 Eastbound at 9:40 this morning, merging onto the Express from the Collectors (whichever interchange is the first one after coming off the 400). His lane was ending, I was beside him, my front bumper was around the area of his B-pillar. I did honk and let off the gas, didn't have enough time to brake. I did notice him right behind ...

Reporting hit-and-run

Where do you report a hit-and-run? Collision reporting centre? Nearest police station?

Re: State Trooper Loses it On Parademic Ambulance Driver!

I can have a patient that is a level 2 acuity, yet transport without lights and sirens of activated. Therefore, justifying pulling over an ambulance based on the fact that the emergency lights are off is a bad idea.

But if you were transferring a patient where priority did not require the use of lights, wouldn't you yield to a cruiser with ...

I think there should be a camera on an officer's person. One of those lipstick cameras with a 2 GB memory card, upload to a server at the end of the shift.

Something seems off about the face of the officer with his hand around the paramedic's neck. Could be just me, but for a second there I saw something more than just a face made from the effort ...

Re: State Trooper Loses it On Parademic Ambulance Driver!

Hmm..looks like I'm in the minority on the vote. :o

The cop had every "right" to pull over the EMS, but simply having that right does not automatically mean it should be exercised. I think a better-worded question would be "Was the cop right to pull over an ambulance?" I would still answer "yes," since the ambulance had no lights on (which wouldn ...

I was on the Florida Turnpike, no idea which area but it was about 2 km from one of the toll collecting stations. Maybe it was just an anomaly on that day...I never drove in Florida again, and I've never been up to those speeds since. The Escape only goes up to 100 mph.

I remember Florida. I was 16, fresh with a G1 license - come to think of it, it may have been illegal for me to drive on a Florida highway.

Re: HOV Lanes

Even the northern States have good lane discipline, except for the major urban areas like around New York City, Chicago, or Detroit.

They also tend to respect the speed limit more. Cars will do 60 mph in a 55 zone, 65 in a 60, etc. Not like us with 20 km/h over the limit being expected on the highways. Not sure if it's greater enforcement or a ...

Speed isn't dangerous per se , although the argument can be made that when something goes wrong, it takes more skill to recover at a higher speed, and if that fails, the consequences are increasingly greater.

I don't like HOV/Diamond lanes either, for all of the reasons you stated.

From the way I interpret it, she drove onto the paved shoulder before the start of the off-ramp, entered the off-ramp, noticed the officer, and merged back onto the highway for the "move over" law (which, by the way, does not apply unless emergency lights are flashing) - and then the officer waved her and another car over.

Lane splitting is legal in several States as well, which is why I was unsure of the laws here. Haven't paid much attention to the motorcycle bits of the HTA.

I think most of the laws require traffic flow to be under a certain limit, and the lane splitter may not exceed the flow of traffic by a certain amount.
