Re: HTA 144(18) RED LIGHT - FAILED TO STOP.
TC just about covered everything. Speed limit is, in theory, the maximum speed that you may travel at under ideal conditions. You know that's not how it's set, but that's what the "eyes of the law" more or less view it as. The only thing that is materially relevant to your defence is that you were driving at a speed that you felt was reasonable and ...

Resurrecting an old thread, since a lot of people are travelling for the holidays. Here's a few that I know of. In fact, it's as long as some of lawmen's posts.

Re: Bicyle-car collision
Oops... yeah, I'm pretty sure you're right, Bookm. So not only was the guy illegally riding on the sidewalk, but he definitely was violating the HTA, not properly equipping the bike. The cyclist shouldn't get a single penny. Just out of curiosity, I looked up the Waterloo by-laws. In order to ride on the sidewalk, the bicycle must have tires of ...

Re: Bicyle-car collision
The guy's brother may or may not be a lawyer. Check and see what the by-laws are regarding riding on the sidewalk in Waterloo, that's a big thing. Also, would you say that the bicyclist was in compliance with the following:

Not sure you have too much to go on here. You already agreed to cover his costs. While he may be acting in "bad faith," 2 months after the fact, to demand $1200, it puts you in a real bind. Might be something for small claims court, which might be the best option for stopping this, but a couple of other regular posters here will have more info than ...

More proof that, collectively, the government of Ontario fell out of the stupid tree and hit every branch on the way down. "Bantario" in action again. "Denial of risk is a very common human reaction," according to Ms. Jaczek. Denial of one's own stupidity is even more common.

Re: Proposed Graduated License Changes
Your suggestion, Bookm, isn't actually that "way-out." It would give the kids chances to practice with a variety of situations so they'd be better prepped when on the road. Expensive? Yeah, but I'd submit that the cost of collisions to the economy is much larger, not to mention the human toll.

Re: Proposed Graduated License Changes
If the longer graduated licensing was accompanied by mandatory real driver training which teaches new drivers things like proper road safety, REAL safe driving habits, skid control, evasive manoeuvres, lane discipline, basic vehicle maintenance, how to properly change lanes, etc., then I'd support it.

The cop wrote down that you didn't "stop for the full 3 seconds" or words to that effect?! HA! If there's any indication that you came to a complete stop, you are not guilty. Should be a piece o'cake beating this one.

Re: Will Ontario tickets affect my Alberta licence?
I've done the switching process before (went from Ontario to Michigan, then back to Ontario). They'll get your driver abstract and apply the penalties/demerit points to your new licence based on your "old" licence. As long as your ticket is paid or you've been found not guilty/charge dropped/whatever, you're all set. Yes, the speeding ticket will ...

Also bring in about 40 friends who are to testify on your behalf as "expert witnesses." Point them out to the Prosecutor when trying to plea-bargain, along with your mountain of evidence. Have them also bring in a stack of books. Failing that, pay another one to distract the officer with a Boston Cream.
