Re: Speeding 146km in 100km (reduced to 129km)

Sorry to hear it didn't go as planned. Did you get 129 or 119? If you got 119, your insurance company, depending on who they are, won't hit you with a huge increase. They might not increase your premiums at all. Getting 10 km/h knocked off the charge also saved you a little bit of money in the short run, and may have saved you from an insurance ...

Re: Speeding 146km in 100km (reduced to 129km)

If the officer does not show up, the Crown essentially has no evidence. They have no witness, really nothing. So yes, ask for it to be dismissed.

Just to verify... in your post above you said that you selected that you do not want to challenge the officer but then you got a notice saying that "this is to confirm that you want to challenge the ...

Re: Only 3 points for running the red?

25% of fatal accidents in Toronto, and about 18% province-wide, happen because someone runs a red light. 0.12% in Ontario are due to street racing. 7% province-wide are due to "excessive speed."

I think that running a red light should be six demerit points, a $1000 fine and a seven-day licence suspension for the first offence. Second offence ...

Re: Fail to Obey Lane Sign

If you ignore the ticket, you get convicted. I'm assuming that you want the easiest way of beating this charge. The appeals process is a long and lengthy one with no guarantee of success.

The clock is ticking on the charge, if you haven't decided to fight it yet. The "right lane exits" SIGN, if it was in Toronto, has to be bilingual. If the SIGN ...

After your daughter has sent in the ticket with the "not guilty" part checked off, get a trial date set and make sure to request disclosure from the Crown to see the evidence that the officer has regarding the speeding charge. No radar? Okay, so he might've paced her after he turned and followed her. Is the speedometer of the cruiser calibrated ...

Re: Fail to Obey Lane Sign

Yes, select the trial option. I think you can fairly easily prove that the streets named do not exist, but that probably won't be enough to quash the ticket. Which sign were you ticketed for disobeying? Was it a "right lane exits" sign?

Here's a link to the French Language Services Act website.

And here is the actual law itself. Long read, but you can decide for yourself if it applies or not.

Demerit points for the offence won't be on the ticket. If you do not respond to the ticket, you will be deemed not to dispute it, and a conviction will automatically be entered against you. If you choose to fight it, use advice from the following website:

Re: Driving through Detroit could get expensive

MSP have a tolerance of about 7 to just over 10 MPH, it seems, except in construction zones (about 3 MPH when workers are present). They also stop drivers who are going too slow. Sheriff's Deputies also patrol I-94 and they generally give up to 10 MPH over the limit. The Taylor Police, who always park a cruiser on I-94 just east of Telegraph Road ...

I belive most (if not all) of Autobahn has the speed limit of "No less than (something)". The speed limit is also adjusted via overhead displays depending on weather, traffic conditions, and there are different speeds for each lane.

Re: Driving through Detroit could get expensive

I lived in Detroit for two years. In that time I drove extensively in the state of Michigan. On average Michigan drivers go 10-20 km/h slower than their counterparts in Ontario. I used to drive regularly between Detroit and Battle Creek on I-94 and Detroit and Saginaw on I-75. I'd usually, conditions/traffic permitting, go 80 MPH, which is 10 over ...

It may be worthwhile to investigate the effectiveness of limiting the hp of one's vehicle based on driving experience regardless of age.

Personally I think the laws were fine just the way they are, but you raise an interesting point, maybe a revision to graduated licensing?

I also believe that a change that comes from the inside usually works better.

Maybe the other officers denounced them but we aren't hearing about it. Then again maybe I'm being too optimistic as well. Everyone's had bad apples where they work, as Bear said. One well-publicized, very embarassing incident for my company resulted in plenty of my co ...

Are they teaching the "right-side" approach at the OPC now? I noticed the officer did that in the video.

You know, maybe they should ban parents from buying souped-up cars for their kids. Maybe they should hold parents accountable when they don't take the keys away from their kids when they drive like Mulcahy's son. Reasonable? Not really, but to a certain extent that'd make more sense than these new laws.

Our local Police Inspector was going on about how great these new laws will be. I went to school with this inspector. At just 17 years old, he cruised the streets in an all black, big-block Nova with a modified 396cu.in. engine (a real street-sweeper!) and no graduated licensing of course.

I work as a Paramedic, thus spending many hours driving around town. I can tell you that drivers in their 30s, 40s, and 50s are quite problematic. I feel terrible for Mr. Mulcahy, having lost his child. It is an unimaginable grief for someone to bury a son or daughter. Mr. Mulcahy turned to the government and said "if the government had only banned drivers who do this stuff, he'd be alive." The vagueness is such that it allows virtually anything you do while driving to be possibly considered an act of stunt driving or street racing. The type of irrevocable and unappealable consequences that can be imposed upon anyone, guilty or not, on the spot, is not justified in a free society.

So if the courts say one thing and the police say ...
