Talk about low and sneaky. They're not trying generate cash, they're just looking out for our safety  The number for the "Taxi" service is (905) 878-5511 and it's real. I think they'd be liable for fraud if they posted up a fake one. I wonder what would happen if people from all over the Halton region started calling to order a cab or inquire about package delivery rates... 8) Edit: Took out a bad link and... If the operator tells you that it is the police service, you can always play dumb and ask if there is a taxi service with a similar number or if an unlicensed cabbie is sporting a police service's phone number. You're just a concerned citizen, afterall  Edit2: An ghost is sneaky enough. Posing as a cab is a transparent cash-grab that has nothing to do with our safety. People slow down when there is a marked cruiser around. This tactic will just create an atmosphere of paranoia among Halton residents and fleece quite a few tourists for cash.

What kind of a man would put a known criminal in charge of a major branch of government? Apart from, say, the average voter.
No reasonable person would... The Municipality of Halton is playing it just plain dirty. However, if they are driving around in "taxis" and they are proudly displaying their phone number, they better be ready to receive lots of taxi calls on it.

It looks like some people really liked the idea and already made posters to help the fledgling cab company... Ofcourse OHTA members are encouraged to spread the word and help the new business out

Hahaha Wow, I don't like it, either. If that was behind me with lights on, I would assume it was a dickweed cab driver who had illegal lights to try and beat traffic. I'd end up calling the cops on the, er...cops As for the paranoia, isn't that the point of an unmarked cruiser? To make the public think twice even if they don't see a marked cruiser nearby?
Hahaha

I agree that all police should have cruisers that look like everyday civilian vehicles and load them up with hidden lights. But the adding of other company logos, signs is not right...I would think it was the same thing as you Squishy, some cabby being an jerk and I would not stop either.

The only time I ever got pulled over by a ghostmarked car, it was broad daylight and the visibility was great so I could see the markings as I went by him (he was right behind a rise). Under those circumstances I pulled over with no drama. However, had there been any doubt about the identity of the vehicle/driver, I would have flashed my 4ways to notify that I do intend to stop and proceded to the next gas station or any place where there's plenty of witnesses and preferably some cameras. In case of that particular traffic stop it would have been 20-30km north of there, so chances are he would have radioed for a b&w lol. I don't try to make traffic stops extra-difficult I actually make it very easy: Cage: 1) Wallet and key on the dash 2) Hands on the wheel 3) Dome light on at night 4) Answer questions (within reason.. I generally avoid admitting that I was speeding) 5) No sudden movements Bike: (only happened once, but still) 1) Ignition off 2) Gloves in the lid, lid on the ground 3) Key in the gas cap 4) Wallet and vehicle docs on the tank Note on the bike stop: That was the first time a cop ever asked me if I had a criminal record, even though I did all of this and all of my docs/equipment were in order. However, there's no chance in hell I'm gonna risk my life and limb to make things easier for someone who may or may not be a cop. I'll take a yelling and a nastier ticket over getting jacked any day of the week. Yelling's just dirt off my shoulders and the ticket can be taken to court.

If in doubt if an unmarked cruiser is legit..... - put on 4 ways - dial *677 (star OPP) on hwys or *911 on your cell - give call taker your licence plate.......it is common for police to check your plate prior to stopping, so therefore dispatch can confirm...YES, officer checked your plate 1minute ago...is legit....so stop now.

Bear, what if I don't have any passengers in the car and no hands-free feature for the cell? Or if I'm on 2 wheels? For legal and moral reasons I wouldn't use a cell while driving. Actually I'm that crazy guy on the motorcycle who will turn your way and warn you not to use the cell while driving.

For Pete's sake, which clown came up with the idea of using a taxi as a ghost car? :x What's next? A ghost car masquerading as a Tim Horton's delivery truck? Maybe they can get a cement mixer or a transit bus and deck it out with the light package.

That's a good point. So under the circumstances, even if I did get charged, I'd have the official phone log to prove that I dialled 911. Other than for emergency calls I'd personally ban cell phones in any way, shape or form, including hands free. Been hit by drivers who weren't paying attention when changing lanes and I just thank God I wasn't on two wheels, so driver distraction is a big no-no in my books.

When is that law supposed to go into effect? Also, if you are 20-30 km away from people, would you even have cell phone reception? Back in December my car got stuck on a sideroad just 6 km north of Fergus and there was no cell reception. I had to hike about a kilometre in around 20 cm of snow before hitching a ride on a snowplow. Got a bit of frostbite for my troubles.

That's why I get more robust quad-band phones. They can get receptions just about anywhere. Even had a nice yap session at some bush air strip half-way b/w Yellowknife and the GBL.

Who's your cellphone provider? Bell and Telus have rather spotty reception. Their phones don't even work on UofG's campus for crying out loud.

It can also depend on the phone.. Here are examples... 1) Telus - With a good phone, people were getting crystal clear reception all over Northern Ontario and in Yellowknife 2) Rogers/Fido - With a crappy tri-band phone (weak antenna, too), I lost reception in a Chinese restaurant in Richmond Hill and in a Wal Mart in Aurora. 3) Rogers/Fido - With a good quad band you can get reception just about anywhere, I even received a phonecall under ground lol

My provider is Fido. I bet it's the phone, I'm using a Nokia 6190 from 1998. I had a sexy quad band flip phone, but the Java interface was too slow for me, especially with the size of my address book. I never got reception underground, though. We relied on pagers in the subway tunnels.

I bought an el-cheapo Chinese A008 phone for $100 shipped. Quad band, dual sim, touchscreen (but it has a numeric pad and a few other buttons), camera, etc etc etc. The reception is awesome.

Haha. Guys does this taxi have a discounted ride for the 50 over stunt driving charge? What is the fares for it? Does the more you speed the cheaper the fare and 50 over is a free ride home! Anyways he doesn't have a spectre in his taxi from the looks. They must be really desperate for cash. No spectre in an enforcement vehicle as an under cover taxi! Anyways when in doubt look at those rims. I hate taxi's they scare the hell out of me. Especially when they use those black steal rims the cops use.

Close enough.. Did geophysical data pre-processing and some field work... Gravitating towards GIS work these days. A lot easier than geophysics and the money's better.

When his OPP career is over, which might be within a year or two, Fantino's put his name in the hat to run for the Mayor of Vaughan. I'm not kidding, either. Wonder how much of a chance he has. It's the same municipality that elected Michael DiBiase, who crashed his car while running red lights three times while in office, then crashed his car by rear-ending someone while on the cellphone the year after he left. It's also the same city that elected Linda Jackson, who is embroiled in a huge controversy right now as well. :? Thought it was something related. Lots of people are doing exploration and field work up north these days, including my sister who is a field geologist based in Vancouver.

I read about that. But since I believe that you have to be a special piece of "work" to be a successful politician, I wouldn't be surprised if he won in a landslide.

We all know that numerous police agencies around Ontario (and world for that matter) set up speed traps in inconspicuous locations to catch motorists who are speeding.
If you know of any speed traps that are in regular use please post them here for all to know and avoid speeding fines.
Format: Town, Location, Direction, known days of operation (if known).
I received a speeding ticket this past weekend, and although the officer was nice and gave my 6yo a coupon for a free slushy, I want to fight the ticket.
The officer wrote the offence as "95km/h in a posted E0 km/h zone" the "E" being what looks like a written backwards 3. Now I know and you can probably guess he intended to write an 8 but that is not what is there it is an incomplete 8 and…
Need some help as i was given a old version yellow ticket(Form4) with improper left turn by an officer last week, which is old version printed by 2009. Then two days later, the officer found me giving a new version ticket with color green(Form4), printed by 2012. The details on face pages for two tickets are similar, but back sides are different. My question is first yellow ticket is effective or…
I was charged of speeding, but I don't know what the radar Decatur Genesis II Select Directional VIP is? please let me know what kind device is this and if any one have the manual can you give it to please pleaseeeee.
Recently I got a ticket for disobey sign under the HTA. From where I turned on to the street, the sign was visible for less than 10 metres, during which time I was performing safety checks for upcoming turn. ( I'll post full details after I first get some advise. )
What is the best defense for this? I took some digital pictures but my camera does not do .raw photos and at that time I had not…
I was turning left from Creditview into the left lane of Argentia Road (in Missisauga), while a police cruiser driving the opposite direction turning right into the right lane of Argentia Road. As I saw the cruiser turning right into the right lane of Argentia Road, I also turned left into the left lane of Argentia Road. The officer stopped me and told me that I was wrong, I had to wait until…
So I was on my way home, going a solid 120 as usual in the fast lane. Someone decides to cut me off going less than 100. I do a quick double lane change and speed up unknowingly hitting apparently 150. After speeding for a mere 20 seconds, I am pulled over. Cop says he reduced the ticket to 49 over, I was charged $359 for that. Of course, my insurance isn't in my car... I had to take it out…
After doing quite a bit of research, I stumbled across this forum and thought it would be a good idea to get some opinions about the situation that I currently find myself in. Hopefully some of you may have experienced this in the past and can provide me with some guidance for the best course of action. Thank you in advance for all your help. I greatly appreciate it.
I was driving on a two-lane Trans-Canada route where the indicated speed limit was 90 km/h and following a car for about 15 minutes. That car was going between 70 to 80 whenever there was a curve or a hill going up ahead. Passing was either not permitted or not safe in those sections. However, whenever there was an opportunity to pass that car, the driver would increase its speed to about 115…
My elderly mother received a city bylaw ticket (Ottawa) for parking on private property. A tow trunk was at the scene to tow the vehicle, and they charged a "drop fee" to unhook the vehicle right away. The bylaw officer who issued the ticket was present and said that the ticket would get dismissed in court (as it was issued in error), and that there should be a way to apply to get the tow…
I went to Huntsville for buying a horse trailer in Thursday.
Got 1 ticket of careless driving nearby east gate of Algonquin Park. They police said he received a complaint that my pickup truck hit the road shoulder and disturbed some gravel dust.
I found a police car traced me, so I turn to a roadside motel. After I parked my vehicle, and heading to motel office, the police car arrived gently…
My trial for a speeding ticket is coming up. I have followed recommendations off ticketcombat website and have sent 3 disclosure requests (without phone number) and have received nothing. At the day of trial it will be about 10 months since the ticket was issued.
I guess the first step will be to ask the court for an adjournment during the Motions, "Your Worship, I would like to ask for an…
Last week I was driving though downtown and because of the slippery / wet conditions could not stop when the light was turning yellow to red and slid in to the intersection. I was hit by another car (near the headlamp). None of us were injured, there was significat damge to the cars. The air bags did not deploy.
I was given a ticket that reads : Red Light - fail to stop - H.T.A sect 144 (18) Fine…
a few years ago, I posted about getting a 19+over ticket and said it was a ridiculous ticket since it was down a hill and everyone drives that 10-20 over.
Everyone here claimed I was outrageous to be driving over the limit by ANY amount and I was driving wildly for doing so. Since those two years have passed, I've stuck to the speed limit...guess what happens?
About a month ago, I got a funny situation where a cop made a u-turn to stop in a very showy fashion (that scared and surprised me) because he almost hit me while doing that.
Anyhow, he claimed that he metered me while he was driving towards me so he said his car is equipped to meter opposite coming cars as he drives. I filed the ticket and I was convicted within few days - an…
My wife got a speeding ticket on a construction zone on Hwy 400 and I went to court to try to defend her.
I ordered the disclosure request and got it on the first trial.
The first trial my strategy was to say there was conflict and misunderstanding of road signs. The prosecutor told me I could not confirm that since I personally wasnt there the day of the offence, and my wife has to…
So I had a guy turn across my lane into his driveway and I hit him. I'm going to court solo so I need any information at all regarding proceedings.
I clearly saw two police officers on scene and got disclosure from only one of their black-books even though they both took notes, one from me and one from him. He got a ticket which I will explain in the next paragraph. I don't see any driving history…
So Again, I really don't know how I'm attracting attention to myself, but I am.
Saturday at 1:30 in the morning I was pulled over on the 400 for 142 in a posted 100 Zone. Honestly, I know I was speeding, but I thought maybe 110-120 (I'm trying to clean up my act.) Anyways, Pulled over, Ticketed, Explained 3 options on the back, and we departed on our way.
Hey everyone. Back last summer I got a parking ticket for being within 3m of a fire hydrant. Funny thing is, I parked (in my estimation) at least far enough away from it, deliberately. There were no markings on the pavement but I can't believe I was within 10 feet of that thing (sorry I suck at metric.)
It's only $20 but I was ticked off 'cause I don't park in front of fire hydrants and don't…
