Re: safe highway merge
That's one of two of those shorty ramps that I know of - the other in Orillia. If I remember correctly, you can see traffic while still on the downhill portion and pick your spot before the dotted lines. The only time I remember having a problem on that ramp was when the car in front of me failed to speed up and I had to merge at around 70 km/h ...

It's my understanding that the mother-in-law was already in the hospital for treatment, and they were rushing there for her last moments. Not saying that excuses the actions of the officer, but I don't think he caused the mother-in-law's death.

I don't see why being injured should result in no tickets being given, especially in cases where those injuries were the result of the driver's own actions.

Under the Liquor License Act, you can't even have open alcohol on board a boat unless there are permanent sleeping and cooking facilities on board. I'll dig up the relevant sections and definitions.

It's not actually the HTA that allows it. "Impaired" is part of the Criminal Code.

Re: Driving with a temporary cast
Along with your possible insurance troubles, there's also this part of O. Reg 340/94. It would likely depend on the type of cast whether it qualifies as "significantly" interfering with your ability to drive. I once had a walking cast on that still allowed mobility in my ankle (ironically, it was for a fractured ankle) and probably gave more ...

I have yet to come across a single ramp that didn't allow the Escort to merge at the speed of traffic (in good weather conditions). Even the really short 'American' style of on-ramp which gives you maybe 30 m to merge will have enough straight road before the dotted lines for me to unleash all 110 HP.

Has there been any interest in applying the 'microexpression' theories from the Fox show to law enforcement? I hear the military has played around with it, and that the technical consultant on the show and co-creator of the system promotes it as an alternative to torture. I could see it being very useful in both military and law enforcement.

Re: safe highway merge
I can't find anything in the HTA specifically targeted at merging, so I guess it would be "unsafe lane change" under s. 154 (1) (a) or "unnecessary slow driving" under s. 132. Maybe even "fail to keep right" under s. 147 (1) due to how much merging lane was left.

Re: front license plate position in ontario
Unless there is something else that specifies 'front bumper', I think it all boils down to the interpretation of Reg. 628, s. 9 (3):

Re: New moderator vote!
This thread got me digging for more information on the braking distance formula. What I found is that mass does have an effect on braking distance, but not in the 'ideal' system considered by that equation. The friction coefficient of a tire will change depending on load and tire pressure. High loads lead to a reduced friction coefficient, and tire ...

What's the context of that formula? Coefficients of friction can change according to velocity as the material heats up, but I think we've always assumed a constant coefficient in the formulas I worked with.

I can't find the definition for it, but I'm pretty sure a "motor assisted bicycle" refers to gasoline-powered bicycles, the ones that require the new low-speed M license. An electric bicycle is called a "power assisted" bicycle and doesn't require a license to operate, and the only helmet difference between that and a normal bicycle is the over-18 ...

The DOT standards were easy too look up, and they only seem to prohibit rigid cosmetic projections. I'm not sure if just the act of modification voids the DOT certification, but ...
