How do you guys feel about mandatory retesting or at least retesting after any ticket that accumulates a demerit point? I think a good portion of the problem drivers can't even pass our current licensing test anymore. They've gotten used to doing it "their way" and can't remember how they passed the test at 16.
Bringing over the German licensing ...

Re: Driver clocked at 250 km/h
But squishy if you want to talk about "natural" abilities then based on your argument, any speed above 15km/h is too fast for the average person's skills.
Considering the skill of the average driver, can you really disagree with that?
It takes us about 10 years to learn to walk without bumping into things, to look where we're going ...

Re: Driver clocked at 250 km/h
I was referring more to "natural" abilities. Sure, you can take advanced driver training courses and tone your skills for several years. But when we talk about public roads, we have to consider the average driver - not a trained performance driver. For the average driver, just knowing that they are more likely to wreck at 250 km/h will not make ...

Re: Is it really illegal to drive with bare feet
That's one of those myths that no one can find the corresponding law to. It's perfectly legal, although some driving schools recommend against it.
Me, I go against the grain and teach people to drive starting with bare feet. It allows them better control over the pedals and decreases the chance of mashing both pedals when they go for the brake. I ...

Re: Driver clocked at 250 km/h
The problem with that is - how do you tell the skill of the driver? You would have to pull them over first. Some sort of special training that comes with special "I can go faster" plates wouldn't work, as someone else could borrow or steal your plates/car. Officially allowing warnings for those with a 30-year clean record won't work for every case ...

Re: Driver clocked at 250 km/h
We still can't overcome the fact that our brains have evolved to accomodate our 15 km/h running speed. The century or so of the automobile has yet to affect us biologically and we just can't process enough things at 250 km/h. That's why track runs are so much safer, because we limit the information we need to process.

Re: Criminal Code Section 39 re impounding of Car
Not to mention the SUVs which have a "best" speed of closer to 70-80 km/h. My Escape gets much better mileage on rural roads because of that (~100 km more per tank). 80 km/h, engine speed around 1800 RPM with the torque converter locked.

Re: Driver clocked at 250 km/h
But there are way too many other variables in any collision to say that a certain speed will result in any outcome. I can guarantee that more people have died at lower speeds than at 250km/h (mostly probably just due to the volume of people that drive at 250), but on the autobahn, some people drive well over 250. I have been close to 300 a few ...

Err, typo? I have the special Dvorak keyboard where the 1 and the 9 are like the same key or something.
And my previous post was in response to Racer's post. I could see maybe seeking compensation if the pothole caused an accident and the street was in worse shape than others. Suing the city just for the hell of it is stupid.

Re: curious about this
At what point does the speed limit become what it is for the road the ramp connects to? Is it 100 km/h all the way up to the intersection (and thus 100 km/h all the way through to the on-ramp), become the speed limit of the road at the beginning of the ramp, or does it assume the 50/80 km/h unsigned speed limit?

Re: residential zone crash, careless?
That's true, and I should have added to double-check the date of manufacture anyways. Although it's rare to find tires more than a couple years old at a retailer. Under good storage conditions away from sunlight and ozone, tires will last in excess of 10 years. Those ideal storage conditions are rare (and a sign of a retailer you want to return to ...

Even if the tire blowout was no fault of the city? Do you honestly think the city owes you anything in that case?
I thought that kind of thinking was limited to big-city America. "I'm inconvenienced, so someone has to pay me!"
Two thumbs down.

Re: residential zone crash, careless?
9/32 is only about 30% tire wear, so the tires are likely an acceptable age unless your vehicle was stored for a while.
Going on the assumption that a tire failure led to the accident, do you remember where the tire blew? If the tire failed in the tread portion, you likely hit something that punctured it. Failures caused by underinflation will be ...

Even in your scenario, speed was a factor. Not necessarily the factor, but still a factor. (The factor, arguably, would be a sudden lack of speed)
Besides, people who speed up from being tailgated have a poor understanding of physics. Even a big honkin' pickup can't push you using air.

Re: Jim Kenzie on truck Speed limiters
From my understanding, you keep to the outside lanes when turning right (90 degrees). You can choose to skip to the inside or stay outside if going straight (180 degrees). You should go to the inside lane and then back out again if you are turning left (270 degrees) or making a U-turn (360 degrees).

i went to look at the car, both front tires are busted, it ""looks"" like the steering shaft/ti rod end, are attached, so its likely the tire blew on me.

Have you driven long enough to encounter understeer? That's what this sounds like - either through excessive speed or "black" ice.
If it is a mechanical failure, look at the tie rods and ball joints. The steering shaft pretty much never breaks.

The oddest thing about the 400 is the phantom traffic jams. Trucks get slowed down from the big hills and start to have elephant races holding up two lanes of traffic. So the guys a few kilometres down the highway get stuck in a jam which mysteriously clears up as we near the hill.
