Re: serious defence for serial ticketers.

The first part's fairly obvious.. A rear passenger can see the speedo depending on where he's sitting (and some cars even have a centrally-mounted speedo, which makes it easy for all car occupants to see the indicated speed of the vehicle).

Yes, rights make courts more complicated.. Maybe that's because an accusation doesn't necessarily mean guilt.. We should dispense with this nonsense, hang'em all and let God sort'em out

Re: We're not unfairly complaining about congestion

For starters, cars are a lot more fuel efficient than they were when the limits were originally placed. You wouldn't even feel a difference in fuel economy between 100 and 120.
Then, how much fuel are we wasting due to increased congestion caused by keeping the cars out there longer? That can be compounded pretty badly.
Finally, that's a band-aid ...

Re: We're not unfairly complaining about congestion

I think it's a lot of development without investing in the infrastructure. I've seen new condos and townhouse communities cropping up all over the place but the only new highway that I've seen in my lifetime is the 407 and not too many people take it because of the costs.
Then there are the unreasonably low speed limits, which keep cars out on the ...

Tell me about it.. Another scary part is that in a "he said she said" scenario, they'll just assign 50/50 fault and both vehicle operators get raped by the insurance industry for 6 years.
I'm glad there weren't any injuries and hope that he doesn't try to milk the AB system.

Re: Top Ten EASY Ways to Dodge a Ticket!

I don't necessarily disagree with you on implementing a non-profit system here in Ontario. However, remember that the rates are lower elsewhere because the legal climates are less permissive of abuse, which keeps the claims down, which in turn keeps the rates down. That's why if we ever implemented a government-run system without dealing with the ...

As long as the plates weren't stolen, which happens. A lowlife driving an uninsured vehicle with stolen plates sure as hell won't stick around to chat with the police.

Re: Top Ten EASY Ways to Dodge a Ticket!

Actually, the biggest reason why we have high insurance rates is the Accident Benefits portion. In Ontario (especially the GTA) there's a thriving industry that milks the AB system for what it's worth and then some. They have been driving up the costs in addition to some insane lawsuits. As for the high penalties for uninsured drivers...

Re: A loud exhaust message from Harley Davidson

No arguments from me on this count. Loud pipes make all of us targets of undue attention. Smart riders actually prefer stealth setups (along having all of the documents and equipment, including plate-mounting up to snuff) to minimize exposure to legal risk. We even put our feet down at stops not because we can't stop the vehicle without putting the ...

When I was a student, I couldn't afford one.. After I started riding, I didn't wanna get one.. I just drive old junkers. All of my car purchases, maintenence and repairs in 13 years of driving wouldn't amount to the price of a single new car.

Re: Court of Appeal sets things right on traffic offences

Actually the second one scares me because while the defendant deserves the conviction and all the consequences that come with it, it's a slippery slope. What if I'm drinking in my house? The car keys are easily accessible, and I can see my car through the window. Or, what if I'm at a party and I just go to the car to get the sleeping bag from the ...

Agreed.. That's why recording devices can come in useful under the circumstances. Those pinheads can seriously harm the finances of your average Canadian. Even a regular ticket, no matter how low the speed on it is (even if it's 1km/h over the limit) can cost a Canadian an easy $500 (either in lost work time, hiring a paralegal or insurance ...

We'd be better off observing it in mid-summer. In any case I keep a low power profile.. As long as you keep your regular GPS on (depending on the settings), you should be covered with proper logs. The cheapest option is a GPS data logger that will either record to an SD card or that will transfer the logs via bluetooth. You can also use a bluetooth GPS device along with a netbook and a nettop with a webcam hooked up and Quantum ...

I have been following all of these either out of common sense (seat belts, no cell phones or even hands-free while driving) or to minimize the risk of legal exposure and number of value-added tickets (keeping the documents up to snuff for example).
A couple more tips:
1) Driving a neutral-colored family sedan without any obvious modifications ...

Not too far west of Kipling. I'm not sure if the right lane is still for buses/taxis/motorcycles/3 car occupants, but it was at the time of the ticketing. Actually I'm not sure if the signs already have motorcycle stickers.. I don't take that stretch of the road very often these days (especially since Parker Brothers moved).

Another note on the incident on that video. I had some martial arts training and have been attacked by as many as 7 guys (locals doing some fanny-smackin').. Well, I agree with most of your post in principle.
For starters, a note on myself. I'm not some FTP-shouting punk-teen. I'm a married man in my 30's. I also grew up in a country that didn't have a proper constitution or a set of checks and balances to keep the cops honest, so I've seen the best and the worst from law enforcement officers.

Yes.. Both my passenger and I were SHOCKED that he ticketed me. I can think of at least 2 situations where having a camera would have been a sure-fire way to avoid conviction.

2) HOV lane ticket (since it was municipal and as far as I knew/know treated as a bylaw ...

Since I didn't wanna post the whole article, I left out the bit on paid duty.
Those fattened pay cheques do not include lucrative "paid duty," where off-duty officers, paid by private companies, earn $60 to $70 an hour to perform such duties as directing traffic around construction.

Actually I really hope that they were accident investigators ...
