A Technical Traffic Collision Investigator (TTCI) or a Reconstructionist (Recon) will attend collisions that include serious bodily harm or death.

They measure the scenes with a surverying type of instrument, take photos, determine speed based on tire marks, braking and amount of "crush" on a vehicle. Obtain warrants to get the "black box" out of the vehicle.

About a month ago I seen the lastest instrument they use.....WOW...if you think of the ole measuring tape, get this. Set this thing up on a tripod, push some button. The officer then takes a pole with a prism and starts walking, places the pole where he/she wants and presses a button which "talks" to the main unit. The unit on the tripod follows the officer (turns it's head, moving up or down) and accepts the reading.

Wow, you need a warrant for the black box? Seems a bit weird as manufacturers seem to be able to get access to it without a warrant (e.g., Nissan with the GT-R VDC/Launch Control fiasco).

The Toronto Parking Enforcement guys should get that tripod gizmo. Now they can measure 15 m from the intersection with authoritah! 8)

It's called a Robotic Total Station. One man survey crew!!! No more whiny instrument man to take up valuable front seat space in the truck, LOL.

Word of advice to young'ns: Always learn the toughest, most technical part of any job at any company. The lazy one's who just want to put in hours end up being replaced by technology eventually ;)
