Re: People are Driving Faster

Methinks that the OPP in the GTA are targeting people going over 130 because if they stop someone for going 128 or whatever they'll miss the guy going 140-150. Just way more people driving faster in the Toronto area, percentage-wise than their counterparts in rural Ontario.

There may be more lanes but they're a lot more crowded, and you can't see ...

The revised statement should be helpful, that's for sure. To address your concern about the insurance company, there's a separation between the outcome of the police investigation (Highway Traffic Act) and the insurance investigation. The insurance company's rules of finding who's at fault are made by the Insurance Act of Ontario and Fault ...

Re: HTA 144(15) Amber light

In order to be convicted for fail to stop, the officer has to clearly observe that the light is red and that, after the light turned red, your vehicle proceeded through the intersection. What I'm getting at is, was he in a position to do so? Was the position of your vehicle with respect to where you're required to stop clearly visible to him when ...

Re: People are Driving Faster

I agree with Reflections. For the GTA, yeah 130 is about right. From personal experience, some roads at certain times will move faster than that. QEW going over the Skyway during the early morning has the fast lane going well over 140. 407 is still fairly fast. The 401 varies, some stretches are very fast. There's still a number of people who whip ...

Re: court trail

There are some paralegal agencies that are willing to travel anywhere in Ontario to provide representation for a traffic ticket. For 20-30 km/h over, the latest info I have is that they charge about $250-$350, but that may only get you down to 15 km/h over (no demerit points). Depends on the paralegal. Some say "we'll win or it's free," but that ...

I have seen all the others mentioned on a DL history.

Really? I was under the impression that of the US states, only NY and Michigan reported the infraction to Ontario unless the driver didn't pay the ticket, because of this:

Demerit points for Out-of-Province Convictions

Drivers convicted of a driving related offence in the State of New York ...

Re: Ontario car/driver, Kentucky speeding ticket

Bel's 100% right here, for two reasons. He already mentioned the reciprocity, but your Ontario driving record will not be affected by the Kentucky ticket. So if you just pay the fine here, you won't get demerit points, and it never shows up on your driver abstract. If you don't pay it, Kentucky will notify Ontario and they'll suspend your licence ...

Re: Section 172 the illegal legislation governing street racing

A lot of times, just from anecdotal evidence, I hear of someone caught under 172 where it was a big incident, alcohol was also involved. The two most recent were the guy who was caught going 231 on the DVP and another going 148 on Jane Street in Toronto, both of them were over the legal BAC limit.

Actually, there was that report that said almost 60% of new graduated drivers were in an collision within the first year of driving, I'll try to dig that up. This was worse then without it.

I found an abstract of a report from MTO on the program, not a direct link but it used all of the data. The original report was either taken off the MTO ...

Re: Ideas how to Improve Highway Safety

407 is expensive and people are willing to pay it to not deal with the congestion on the 401, if they're willing to go that far out of the way. 407 also has the lowest crash rate of any highway in North America, even with the regular excessive speeding.

Province shouldn't have sold it in the first place, but they did. Actually, they leased it, so ...

Re: Transport Trucks limited to 105 km/h?

Most driver's training courses always stress that, while on the highway such as 400 series, it is best practice to keep the right lane clear to allow for easier merging/exiting for other drives

I was taught "lane of least resistance," (Young Drivers) meaning the one offering the most forward visibility. I usually just keep right because most of ...

Re: Transport Trucks limited to 105 km/h?

Driving in the middle lane of the highway is also an offence

How often is that enforced? From what I've seen, almost no one except the truckers and the very rare driver drives in the right lane. When I drive on the 401 between Windsor and Tilbury, which is mostly three lanes in each direction, I have the right lane all to myself because ...

Graduated licensing is better than nothing. At least new drivers aren't given full privileges immediately. Some places you can take a written test one day and then within a month go for your road test, no restrictions. If the gov't was really interested in safety, they'd repeal ...

I agree with most of what you're saying. To add to it:

Infact there was a study done by the University of Toronto which recommended a speed limit of about 130 km/h on the 401 or somewhere near the 85th percentile.

Here is that study:
