Re: Proposed Graduated License Changes

A big thumbs up to the simulator approach suggested by Bookm and Radar Identified. Beats me why, since simulators work well for learning to handle complex tasks from flying airplanes to navigating at sea to operating industrial cranes to driving transport trucks (in Europe), they are not a required component of learning to drive a car in Ontario ...

Re: Only 3 points for running the red?

I'll vote for upping it to six, because this really is dangerous behaviour. Way worse than, say, "speeding" at 130k with the flow of traffic on a 400-series highway (though I don't know, offhand, how many points that's worth).

I vote with trepidation, though, because I wouldn't trust the current folks at Queen's Park to get it right if they were ...

The scope is offset from where the laser pulse is emitted. How is it aligned for different distances ?
I'm no great fan of having laser beams pointed at me while I'm driving, but I don't think parallax is an issue. The laser beam is not significantly affected by gravity and has no wind resistance, so the "error" between the sightline of the scope ...

"Kind of crazy" is admirably understated, picus. Sounds like an OPP feeding frenzy that got out of control. It would be amusing if it weren't for the nasty penalties involved -- said penalties including, of course, not only the fines and the "victim surcharges" but also the possible insurance implications, the hassle of dealing with the whole mess ...

Good points by HB, TC and racer! I think the roundabout at the west end of Ancaster, where Wilson meets Meadowbrook, is a classic example of a roundabout that would be a lot better if it were bigger. Drivers would likely (we can hope) be better at using them if they were more common.

The bilingual argument may make any discussion moot here (and good luck with it), but I think there's still an interesting point. Wouldn't this make it a legal lane change (assuming correct signaling, etc.)? I wouldn't have thought you'd be "locked in" until the line became solid. I suspected as much. Sounds like in this, as in many things, our police methods are more sensible (and at least as effective) as the cowboy stuff we see on that TV show.
