Re: Perturbed

Every time we drive, we risk being charged with something -- that's just a fact of Ontario life. And it is not likely that a police officer who has decided to stop your car will then turn around and not charge you with whatever he or she thinks they can successfully write you up for: that would be just a waste of everybody's time. If such a "break ...

Re: Disabled person parking ticket - $350!! Help!!

My partner got a ticket for parking in disabled parking, and we don't want to pay!
"ticketcombat" speaks of the moral dilemma involved in deciding whether or not to help in an accused's defense. Certainly, there are some charges (those being laid frivolously under Bill 172, to cite the obvious) that every responsible driver should help defend ...

Re: Correction for posting, is this law 6 years old

Someone was listening to you....

The chances that any government mandarin was moved by or even aware of my little peep are zero, but it's good to see some publicity is being given to this. I would have liked to see a clear reference to the heavy penalties that we drivers face if charged, but, hey, this is a start. And, agreed: let's hope a lot ...

Re: Correction for posting, is this law 6 years old

Even that wouldn't have helped in this case, Bookm (and yes, I know you're kidding), because the trucker's defense was -- are you ready for this? -- that he was following so closely behind the 18-wheeler in front of him that its rear end was all he could see in front of him, and when the first truck moved left to clear the police vehicle, why, he ...

I still know the location of the incident and is visible for approx 1 to 1.5 full km past an overpass. Hwy is flat and level. I am guessing that since the judge made the decision that police can not block a lane or partial lane in an emergency ...

Re: Correction for posting, is this law 6 years old

I agree entirely that sheer common sense would make any alert driver slow down and move over at least one lane to stay well away from any emergency vehicle on the side of the road with its lights activated, law or no law. Personally, I slow down and stay as far away from the thing as possible: whatever's going on over there, I don't want to be part ...

Re: Correction for posting, is this law 6 years old

I think it's very unfortunate that you were caught on this, especially as you were a visitor here. It's no comfort, I know, but I think you have a group of particularly knowledgeable Ontario friends, if one in ten of them knew about this law. I doubt very much if one in fifty Ontario drivers is aware of it.

It certainly has not been well ...

Re: Eventual law could affect all kinds of gadgets

Oh and what about the police cars?, are they not full of electronic "gadgets" like radars, gps, cell phones and computers..go figure. A police chase is on and the officer is trying to input the licence plate of the vehicle ahead, how safe is that.??

Well, the policemen usually (I hope) radio (although this is using an electronic device) to base ...

Re: Electric Cars in Ontario?

OK, thanks, admin. I guess the legislation (whatever it is) is aimed at the golf cart type vehicles: they're not outlawed because they're not powered by an internal combustion engine, but because they're too slow to blend with other traffic and/or don't offer occupants enough protection in a crash and/or fail to meet other safety requirements.

I ...

Re: Eventual law could affect all kinds of gadgets

This is gonna' irk a few readers here,... but, ya' know, I think the drive-thru line at the local Tim Horton's is one of the most dangerous systems out there..

Another "non-gadget" distraction I have seen on numerous occasion is map-reading while driving...

Oh! One more thing. They better exclude CB radios from the gadget definition list ...

Re: Eventual law could affect all kinds of gadgets

Ban the use of cell phones while driving, of course -- and the sooner the safer -- but it sounds like the good folks at Queen's Park are holding that up until they can breathe life into another of their clumsy ban-everything bills.

They may be wondering if they can go after in-car radios (including satellite radios), for instance. A radio = an ...

Re: Electric Cars in Ontario?

According to current regulations, no electric car can be driven in Ontario (and anywhere else in Canada except BC)...

Dumb question: What law is it that prohibits these cars? I realize that a law can always be found that makes just about any vehicle illegal (my own sedate and absolutely stock Hyundai Elantra GT would fail the Motor Vehicle ...

Pet peeve #2: Cutters.

"Cutters" is the term used to describe those jerks who breeze by lines of vehicles waiting their turn to get through where the multi-lane traffic flow has been reduced to fewer lanes, or to a single lane: construction, built-up area, emergency, etc., etc.

A friend of mine says he actually met one of these people at a party ...

Re: What are your Driving Pet Peeves?

Pet peeves? Well, since you asked, I have two. I'll vent them as separate threads, in case there's more interest in one than in the other.

First, people who try to drive and to use a cell phone at the same time. Hand held or hands free, makes no difference to the statistics. Either way, any driver (and we've all seen them) who is involved in a ...
