Hi,
I'm curious if those loud aftermarket mufflers they sell are illegal in Ontario. Is it officer discretion to determine what is "improper" or does there have to be some type of sound measurement done?
Thanks,
Cruz.

Re: Aftermarket mufflers.....
The muffler itself is legal to buy, but most owners do not install all the parts that come with the muffler. The parts that are typically not installed is the "baffle" or "silencer" that is to be put at the very tip of the exhaust. Without a baffle/silencer installed the muffler is a "straight-thru" muffler which is illegal.
Here is a picture of a muffler MINUS the baffle. You can see the "bolt hole" where the baffle is to be installed.

more importantly......I would not want to constantly "tick-off" my neighbours by roaring down the street with a loud muffler. Nothing like relaxing in the backyard and hearing a vehicle go by......or worse be sleeping and be awaken by this vehicle.
Re: Aftermarket mufflers.....
I don't want one. I actually find them quite irritating and wonder why there are so many around. Hence my question.
Re: Aftermarket mufflers.....
Yup, mee too. Apparently some people think that "louder is safer"...

Yup. That's me!! ![]()
I , too, don't care for the sound of a "coffee-can" muffler stuck on to the back of a Civic, but I DO love the roar of a big American V8 blowin' noise out the back of an old car.
I have a pair of vintage Walkers for my GTO (as in pic, below). The caption in the ad explains everything!!
I thoroughly "get it". Those noisy ricers DO get attention from the opposite sex (my teen daughters always look when one zooms by). It's all about the "look-at-me" thing. They're teenagers. That's what teenagers do! I might not agree with their style of noise, but I'm happy to see kids still play with cars. I respect them WAY more than kids that lay around on the couch playing video games all day.

Re: Aftermarket mufflers.....
Turns my head too. Usually as in "I hope that joker ain't gonna fire up his engine when I'm sleeping" though.

oh yeah....that excuse......if that is the alledged reason then all these people should put their exhausts facing forward so it transmits ahead to let traffic and pedestrians ahead know they are coming. Not behind so all they are doing is annoying others after they have went by.
Re: Aftermarket mufflers.....
Some motorcyclists insist that their loud pipes are a safety necessity, so that people will "hear them coming," and react accordingly. Yeah... sure...
Doesn't work too well for emergency vehicles with the siren blaring so I don't know why they think a loud muffler will make any difference.

Loud mufflers on MC = bad riders as they think the loud compensates for their own inadequencies in skill of riding. Now how deaf are you at the end of your ride?? I know with 12hrs on a Harley, my ears are a little buzzy, at that is with proper pipes!
Exactly, don't hear a siren either.
Also similiar is a fighter jet, one of the most loudest sounds, but fly towards you, don't hear a thing until the jet is over or past you...by then it is too late!
Re: Aftermarket mufflers.....
In my case it's just being cheap. The p.o. (maybe even the one before him) blew the packing on my pipe. The way it's installed, it's not really practical to repack so either way it'll run me $500, so I'm leaving it as is and keeping the rpm's low at night in residential areas. I'd prefer a stealth setup.. Less police attention ![]()
Re: Aftermarket mufflers.....
I have a disability that makes even normal sound levels painful. As such, I live as a shut-in. There were about 400 motorcycles that drove by my house this weekend that has made my pain even more unbearable. If these cyclists insist that loud mufflers increase safety, they should recognize this disability which they could easily get from their own loud mufflers and they can disable someone else.
Hi everyone. I'm asking for a friend who has a question of interpretation.
He was ticketed for using a hand-held device. He contends that he was acting within the exemption provided under Subsection 14 (1) of O. Reg. 366/09, which reads as follows (emphasis added):
Exemption for pressing buttons

Hey guys i just wanted to know what speeds you see others do on the roads on a regular basis. As we all know no body drives 100 km. It seems they only hit that speed twice once on the way up and once on the way down.
it seems the De Facto limit on the 401 is about 120-130. But lately i dont know if…
On June 10, 2017, I was pulled over by an OPP on the 403 heading WB and told I registered 136km/hr. I kept chit chat to a minimum and took my ticket and went on with my day. I later requested my disclosure and did not receive it until a week before my Oct. 27 court date, and so I had my date…
Anyone know any more information? Apparently kathleen wynne mentioned trying to introduce legislation after more than 20 years of no speed cameras. My guess is that it wont happen, since they've tried before many times to bring it back after it was abolished.
The other day I was given a ticket for speeding 119 in a 90, on highway 17 near Marathon, ON (Speeding ticket capital of the universe, BTW). The officer claims to have "clocked" me using the vehicle mounted radar at 121 KMH and dropped it (presumably to lower fine and demerits).
I was not going that…
Hi everyone,
I posted this in the 3 Demerit Section and haven't received any
responses.
I received a failure to stop at an amber light ticket on April 17, 2009. At my First Attendance Meeting I asked to read the police officer's notes and remember thinking how ridiculous they were and the difficulty…
I was on the right side of the road going straight when a pedestrian waved down the taxi driver in the lane next to me. He pulled over to the right without any notice or signalling and hit me with the side of his car.
There were many witnesses but I immediately had a concussion and did not think of…
Hello,
My mother was driving EB on a 4 lane street (2 lanes EB, 2 lanes WB).
She was in the left hand lane and started a left hand turn so as to enter a side street, crossing WB traffic. There was NO intersection. She hit a cyclist who was heading WB. Police where called but none showed up. My…
If the speed limit is 50, and you do 100+, not only do you get 6 points. Your car gets impounded for a week, and your license suspended for 7 days, along with a hefty fine of at least $2000. The penalty is actually the same as for racing. The law came in effect on October 1, 2007. Remember -…
I was driving westbound on Hwy. 8 earlier this month in North Dumfries Township, approaching the Cambridge city limits. The weather was clear and the roads were dry. I noticed a vehicle on the shoulder on my side of the road, pointing towards me. This didn't concern me right away, as it is a rural…
