Re: Insurance - Radar Detectors & Laser Jammers
Some companies will forgive one, others will forgive 2 in a 3-year period. The 20% increase was extra-nasty since I was under 25.

I had another ticket on the record. Got caught doing like 110-115 on the north end of the 400.

Re: Insurance Issues...
On another note.. When I was barely 20, I had an HO-converted 302 Cougar. Took that thing up to Sudbury and back at speeds averaging 150-160 and was getting like 12l/100km which is about 2l more than most gasoline fourbangers that I've driven at about 120-130. Ofcourse, in the city the only thing that came close to matching its 20l/100km ...

Tdrive - I have a 91 Yamaha FZR600. It's an older carburated bike, actually the first supersport. She's runnin' a little rich and has like 100lbs on its modern counterparts, but still gets me about 5l/100km on average.. That includes a good spread of city riding, highway riding and goin' a little crazy in the twisties. It really depends on your ...

Re: Insurance - Radar Detectors & Laser Jammers
I learned that lesson the hard way at the age of 22. Reported a 5 over ticket to my insurance company and the rates went up 20%. Since then I made sure I stayed informed, made sure my documents were in order and and I fight every single moving violation ticket.

I read about that. But since I believe that you have to be a special piece of "work" to be a successful politician, I wouldn't be surprised if he won in a landslide.

Re: Insurance - Radar Detectors & Laser Jammers
I am well informed on this issue. The insurance companies divide the convictions into minor and major.
Major = 49+km/h over the limit (with some it's like 45-46 over), stunting, careless, blotto driving
Minor = Everything else
Therefore, whether you're doing 1 over the limit or 44 over the limit, it's still treated as a "minor conviction," the ...

Same with me. I don't see myself cagin' it more than 130-140km/h on the 400 series highways. Too much fuel. Even on 2 wheels, just going in a straight line isn't much fun. The twisties are where the fun's at

Close enough.. Did geophysical data pre-processing and some field work... Gravitating towards GIS work these days. A lot easier than geophysics and the money's better.

Re: Insurance - Radar Detectors & Laser Jammers
They'd treat it as a "conviction." Like speeding 1km/h to 49km/h, running a red, unsafe lane change etc etc etc.

I bought an el-cheapo Chinese A008 phone for $100 shipped. Quad band, dual sim, touchscreen (but it has a numeric pad and a few other buttons), camera, etc etc etc. The reception is awesome.

No thank you. They already have enough of a link with the MTO. If they didn't have access to my conviction record, I'd gladly pay all of my tickets and wouldn't waste any more court's time.

Even though I live in Toronto and take it where the Sun don't shine with no lubrication, I can understand this particular factor. The higher the traffic density the higher the risk.
Even the high rates compared to the US are understandable b/c the levels of coverage are different. South of the border you can get away with 30,000 which wouldn't ...

It can also depend on the phone.. Here are examples...
1) Telus - With a good phone, people were getting crystal clear reception all over Northern Ontario and in Yellowknife
2) Rogers/Fido - With a crappy tri-band phone (weak antenna, too), I lost reception in a Chinese restaurant in Richmond Hill and in a Wal Mart in Aurora.

Re: Insurance Issues...
The problem is that the insurance companies don't really care about ending fraud. The more claims there are the more money they can make. Let's say they're regulated to a 10% profit margin on premiums.. So if there's 50b in claims, they can make 5b in profit. If there's 150b in claims, they can make 15b in profit. That's why they are also willing ...

That's a good point. So under the circumstances, even if I did get charged, I'd have the official phone log to prove that I dialled 911.
Other than for emergency calls I'd personally ban cell phones in any way, shape or form, including hands free.
Been hit by drivers who weren't paying attention when changing lanes and I just thank God I wasn't on ...

Bear, what if I don't have any passengers in the car and no hands-free feature for the cell? Or if I'm on 2 wheels? For legal and moral reasons I wouldn't use a cell while driving. Actually I'm that crazy guy on the motorcycle who will turn your way and warn you not to use the cell while driving.

The only time I ever got pulled over by a ghostmarked car, it was broad daylight and the visibility was great so I could see the markings as I went by him (he was right behind a rise). Under those circumstances I pulled over with no drama.

Re: Stop sign questions
The problem is that if the whole convoy doesn't go through as a single unit, 5/6 times some car/truck/van will get in the middle of the formation. Then we're risking speeding or stunting charges to to get the group back together. So either way, it's a no-win situation.

No reasonable person would... The Municipality of Halton is playing it just plain dirty. However, if they are driving around in "taxis" and they are proudly displaying their phone number, they better be ready to receive lots of taxi calls on it.

Re: What to do at an intersection where the lights never change
You can see them. They appear as about car-sized rectangles in the pavement, just in front of the white line. Magnets don't work no matter what e-bay sellers say. People have been trying rare earth magnets and hard drive magnets, to no avail. One thing that works if the calibration isn't TOO far off is to lay the kickstand on the strip (as long as ...

Re: What to do at an intersection where the lights never change
Getting off your vehicle could get you in some legal hot water. I usually just ask a pedestrian to push a button. If there are no pedestrians around, you can always make a right and pull a U-turn. If there is plenty of traffic and a cager pulls up behind me, I just go forwards and beckon him to drive up to the sensor. If there is no traffic and I ...
