Turning Right On A Red Light From Multiple Right Turn Lanes

by: Omega_Gin on

I'm now living in Saint Catharines, Ontario and the other day I came to this intersection. You could only turn left or right because you could not go straight through cause there was a one way street. There were two lanes on the street I was on. There was a right turn lane and a left/right turn lane. The intersection is controlled by traffic lights. I know you can turn right on a red light after stopping and making sure the way is clear, but is it legal to turn right on a red light from the left/right turn lane? I know it's a stupid question and I figured the answer is yes, but I rather confirm it for obvious reasons. Does anyone know if it is legal to turn right from the left/right turn lane, or can you only do it from the right turn lane?

Okay, thank you. I just wanted to be sure because some people told me traffic police (or what ever they are called) said that it isn't legal. I hate grey area's of the law like this. Logically it seems legal to me, but I'd really hate to get a ticket for something like this.

Assuming you turn into the correct lane, as Stanton mentioned...

I figured it was, and I know to go into the far lane. Its common sense to me, should be to everyone, but I've seen people do the stupidest stuff before. I've noticed that a lot of people go into the incorrect lane, I really don't see whats so hard about going into the correct lane, then simply making a lane change.

Yeah tell me about it... I live in Durham region and exit at the Harmony and Bloor St 401 exit in Oshawa... just east of that highway exit is a two-lane left turn lane that, when Im on the outside of it, I constantly have people swerve into my lane during their turn. Its so dangerous and people seem to not notice, or care. It blows my mind.

No, I am not the chief of Toronto Police.

It is the duty of every GTA driver to cross over multiple lanes when turning.

A few weeks ago two cars were turning westbound on to Lawrence Avenue not far from where I live. One was northbound turning left, the other southbound turning right. In places where people have the slightest semblance of an idea of how to drive, the northbound driver would've turned into the far left lane, and the southbound driver into the far right lane.

Didn't happen.

They collided at a 45 degree angle in the centre lane. The right-turning driver tried to turn into the far left lane, and the left-turning driver tried to turn into the far right lane at the same time. TPS was not happy.

getting to the point where road crews will have to start putting lane markings thru every turn to show people what lane to be in.....then again, wont make a difference....so put up concrete turn barriers LOL
