Question: 2 Lanes In Same Direction Merge. Right Of Way

Unread post by ckc »

There is a intersection that I drive past almost every day, and I'm unsure who has the right of way.. here is a description.

2 lanes going the same way. (dashed line between the lanes)

lanes merge after dashed lines end.

No signs on warning that lanes ends/merges.

No markings on the road on which lanes ends.

both lanes angle towards the center (each other)

it's not an "intersection" as there is no cross traffic or driveways.

Car on right would hit the curb if it did not merge.

Car on left would be on oncoming lane (with traffic) if it did not merge.

who has the right of way if both cars are side by side ?

What's the intersection/town? Not to fault your description, but might help if we could see it on Google maps or something.

Here is more info..

The direction of "Travel" is from the north west, to the south east.

As Campus road passes Elmbank, there is approx 150 meters of 2 lanes, and you can see where they end (approx 6 "dashes" from the intersection. Aprox half way from the intersection to the first driveway on the south side ).

90% of the traffic stays in the right lane and goes into the driveway for the building, however the occasional car continues straight, and this is where you have a "merge" challenge with the cars in the left lane that are going straight.

Wow, you're not kidding. The lanes really do look like they merge equally and the lack of warning signs is pretty bad.
