Go Bus Ignore Sign

by: viper1 on

401 east exit at Salem road.(Ajax)

I posted a long time ago about cars going straight through to the on ramp east bound.

After that, OPP would sit there once in a while and nab cars going straight through.

Today I was North on Salem to enter 401 east.

A "Go Bus" goes right through as well as hammering the pedal.(I could hear the noise).

I really think that was a dangerous move.

There 2 No straight ahead signs above the lights.(for the bus to see)

I can only imagine the mess if a car/van/semi/etc turned at the same time.

I understand that the vehicle turning would be at fault. But holy cow a bus taking that risk is beyond me????

It was around 3:55 P.M today.

Until today I always thought of GO drivers as close to the best.

Any thoughts

Certainly not good, but even professional drivers have "moments". I'd be curious if the driver just wasn't familiar with the route, or just decided to take a chance.

As for fault determination, I think someone turning could have a possible defence, especially if the bus driver was charged with disobey sign by the police.

He knew what he was doing. At the bottom of ramp you can only turn right or left.(legally).

Sign's clearly show on or off lanes.

I will try a complaint to Go-Transit.

I filled out all the forms at go-transit on-line site then got 404 error.

I will call next just to see what they say.

There are four signs indicating no through traffic, two prior to the intersection two on the traffic lights. There are also lane signs posted prior to the intersection indicating the left and centre lane are for left turns only, and the right lane for right turns only.

Move backwards a bit from where the link takes you to see the signs before the intersection.

Also - watch the brown minivan in the center lane - he goes right through!

I am glad you posted that pic diehard.

Just recently they have added "buses excepted" to the bottoms. Also at Brock and Westney roads.

I checked all three today and sure enough "Buses Excepted"

I think this will result in a major accident.Regulars who use these ramps will be OK (I always take a good look before

proceeding) but the last vehicle I would expect to barrel through would be a bus!

Go-Transit does have a customer concern department to call.

But I wonder who changes these rules not telling anyone?

It boggles my mind for this to be allowed. I can picture a school bus doing it and hitting someone.

The biggest problem is it ,is, at the bottom of a hill and they give it the throttle go get up the other side, or make the yellow.

What stupidity.

You noticed it is exit 404(404 error lol)

While I cant say with certainty what Ajax traffic engineers had in mind, typically its done to help ease congestion. My guess would be when the 401 eastbound is backed up, that would make a nice little alternate to cut ahead. However that would cause backups on the off ramp and probably create additional congestion for Salem road due to the additional through traffic.

Certainly not the crime of the century, but usually the signs do have some reasoning behind them.

They have changed the signs to allow buses a straight through access.(It might save them 4-5 minutes)

Today I stopped fully and looked every way (up the ramp/pedestrians/late turning south-bound cars etc.)

I turn the corner and have to jam my brakes. There was what looked like a ride stop there.

Admin, the OPP do read this site and I applaud their work. I think it was more of an information kind of stop.

(watch out as buses may go straight through).

If Ajax (bylaw) reads this site please post signs notifying The north bound drivers of the new rules.

The safer my drive home gets the better I like it.

Cheers
