Also, it is illegal to do that, right? Someone else posted that it was only illegal to sell a vehicle with an altered odometer, so the ones offering the service were off the hook as long as they weren't car salesmen. But I found it to be an offense under the Weights and Measures Act - is that criminal?

I bought a car with a broken odometer....didn't care but I was told of this....it was $700 and certified for $1100, college car.

I think it's illegal since it would constitute insurance fraud. Your policy only allows you x number of kilometers per year. I've heard of insurance companies using the odometer reading in order to not pay out on claims, based on the fact that the policy holder had broken the terms of the policy by driving over the allotted amount.


Also, you're required to record you odometer reading on your vehicle registration renewal.
