Re: Careless Driving - For Running Stop Signs on a Bicycle
Your post made me wonder when the HTA section that qualifies bicycles as vehicles was written. IMHO, this is an outdated definition from the days where cyclists were considered a menace to the majority of folks on the move since they either walked or used a horse and buggy.

I knew that I must've learnt a thing or two here. Thanks for the reaffirmation, Stanton.

Clarification re: s.199 Failing to Report
This is in regards to an incident involving a colleague of mine. He was driving the emergency vehicle with the warning systems of activated, driving at about 55km/h on a snow covered country road that has multiple bends. Upon coming out of a particular sharp bend, a woman was standing in the roadway and did not move when he honked the horn multiple times. He took evasive action which resulted in her being struck by the side of the vehicle, at the rear. She denied any injuries and signed the documentation detailing the lack of injury. No damage was incurred on the vehicle. The police are now ch...

Re: Emergency vehicles
I wish that the HTA would direct drivers to always move right, regardless if on a 2, 4, or 6 lane road. When driving code 4 (lights/siren), we always use the left lane unless blocked by stopped traffic. When drivers move left on multi-lane roadways, I find myself stuck behind them because 1) there is no left shoulder; 2) drivers to my right continue on so I can't change lanes in safety; and 3) I am now honking at this driver because he occupies the only lane that was free. Case in point: Last Tuesday we were going for an unconscious (read: sleeping on park bench, but nobody thought of attempti...

Re: Petition to change HTA136 (1)(A)Failure to Stop at Stop
Instead of petetioning to have the wording of the offence changed or create a new HTA offence, you should petition your municipality to replace unnecessary stop signs with yields. It seems to be somewhat of an epidemic in North America to put 4-way stops at almost all intersections regardless of traffic volumes and rates of collisions. IMHO, a stop sign should only be used when a priority and non-priority road intersects. The heavily travelled road need not have stops when it is crossed by a minor road. This is the trend in Europe. (Why is it that we seem so backwards & non-progressive?!?)...

Driver's lack of diligence = ....
This PSA shows why diligence is of utmost importance while driving. If one visits http://www.ourboots.ca/ and clicks on EMS, one can see the devastating impact of a driver who fails to pay attention. Sadly, this occurs more often than I ever imagined.
Maybe we should have dash cams in ambulances and forward the offences to the local PD! Imagine, a cash cow for the municipality and maybe, just maybe, some increased compliance from the motoring public.

Re: Lights + siren = Pull over and stop
sad thing is... the ambulance driver probably got charged. What RI meant to say was the "driver of the ambulance", not the ambulance driver. They've gone the way of dinosaurs and the dodo bird! Althought I know what you mean, I'm anal about that. Truth is we rarely come to a full and complete stop at red lights and stop signs, unless of course traffic is heavy, a clear view of cross-traffic is unavailable, etc... Otherwise, we simply slow down, make sure the way is clear and away we go. This isin't because we're irresponsible, yielding is usually sufficiant. I will yield with...

 :?: Seems like some Southern Ontarian has forgotten that the land north of Barrie is actually inhabited. For example, according to the MTO's official map (http://www.mto.gov.on.ca/english/traveller/map/images/pdf/southont/sheets/Map5.pdf, N24-N25), a senior living on route 12 near Twelve Mile Bay will not be allowed to leave said roadway. Also, once Hwy 69 between Sudbury and Parry Sound is 4-laned and becomes Hwy 400, it looks like seniors will be trapped in the North, lest they pass through Michigan via Sault-Ste-Marie or make the long trek to via North Bay on Hwy 17. This is beyond ...

I'd be curious to know how much of a role regulation, read over-regulation, plays in this scenario. I'm not suggesting that rules are a bad thing, but too much of a good thing isn't, well, good. If we think about it, based on me experiences in the GTA, drivers are constantly looking to find out which sign is where and prohibiting them from doing what, when. Confusing enough just thinking about it, no? Anyways, they rely too much on signs and signals. Same goes with pedestrians. Reliance on what a system says removes much of our interaction driver-driver, driver-cyclist, and driver-pedestrian i...

Motorists are slow to react when we're behind them. Or they'll simply pull over to the left into the centre turning lane as I am overtaking them in that same lane...I was once voluntold by a female driver (as in forced) to test a rig's braking system that way and then she gave me a "what are you doing there?!" look. Little does she know how close she came from being seriously injured. emergency vehicles on priority calls spend about 1/2 of their time on the wrong side of the road... It's amazing how fast people will pull over when I play chicken, less the chickening-out part. Driving...

Had several do that to me a few times....then they got a visit from their friendly neighbourhood officerRadar Identified wrote:
Earlier today I watched a police cruiser, lights & siren going, roaring down Victoria Park with a fire truck in tow. Okay, no issue... except TWO cars were hitching a high-speed ride behind the fire truck as most of the drivers cleared out of the way.
