I hope that it's 30 days from registration and not just any 30-day period.

The key is

who do not have a single post

This is actually no longer a problem, but when we first started the site, more than half of the registrations were spambots. Given there was not a lot of registration going on. We have reduced the spam problem using spam filtering methods.

I usually get speeding tickets. Not a lot. But this time I got caught slowing. What? Yeah, thats what I said. Driving too damn slow. 32 year old...sporty little car...driving too slow. Not high. Not drunk. Maybe a little tired from a hard day at work. I was driving 10 under the limit. 80 in a 90. So....why the ticket? 10 over gets me....NOTHING. Cops don't look at you if you do ten over. They do ten over.

Can I beat the charge? I sure as hell am going to try. 2 points and a 110 dollar fine. Yup. I'm fighting it. Can anyone give me some advice? And the Crown does not want to deal with me. I told her that I would pay a hefty fine...as long as I did not get the points taken off my license. She said no. I am confused. Oh well.

I love the web site though.

Hey y'all.

I have trolled these forums before (and I suspect I know one of the admins from working together once), but I didn't sign up until today. I look forward to being a part of this community!

I have taken an interest in this aspect of the law because I have had some tickets in my younger days and have learned through the experience of representing myself for all but one of them.

It is one of my hobbies now, as my friends and acquaintances always come to me for advice as to how to proceed when they've gotten a ticket. I try to help them to the best of my knowledge but I am always learning! So hopefully I can contribute a little here, and gain knowledge from your contributions also!

Regards,

SLYK

I guess I'm due for an intro post.

I'm 22, living in Orillia, Ontario. I did two years of an engineering degree at the University of Waterloo, but I just couldn't sit at a desk most of the time for the rest of my career. I spent the next two years going to random lectures in different departments, but I was always drawn to law enforcement. I plan to get an easy job in Orillia while I get in better shape and apply to the OPP later this year or next year. I don't know where they'll put me, but I hope to eventually end up in Highway Safety.

My first ticket was given to me the week after I got my G1 license (this street-cred will negate any and all future claims of me driving like someone's grandmother). An unmarked Impala got me doing 70 in a 50 on a two-lane road in Orangeville. Being a new driver, my parents convinced me to get a lawyer to reduce the charges and avoid demerit points. My next and last ticket was for doing 60 in a 50 - reduced from 72. Road conditions were bad and I pulled out from a somewhat blind corner just as a panel van was coming up the road. I gave too much gas and the tires broke loose, which alerted officers running a speed trap in the opposite direction. I also have two parking tickets; one was for, oddly enough, parking the wrong direction on a roadway. These three tickets were just paid without a fight.

Ever since I finished high school, I have read the HTA at least once every year, so I tend to keep out of trouble. I have also added my own "set of rules" that I apply to my own driving, such as not passing on the right, using the left indicator instead of tailgating to indicate intention to pass, not trying to merge at less than the speed of traffic flow. Ever since discovering cruise control, I tend to set it at the limit and relax. I'm in Stratford once in a while, so I think I'll eventually end up on one of Bookm's videos with him getting more and more irritated as I fail to speed up. :D I have taught several friends to drive, but the recent focus on stunting has made it risky to do my parking lot understeer/oversteer recovery lessons.

I joined up here because this site gives me a chance to see all sides of a case - the officer giving the ticket, the person receiving the ticket, and the lawyers who fight the ticket.

Improper signage

Posted: Fri Apr 10, 2009 2:53 pm
by ranmor

The :D , who have no real police work to do, gave me a speeding ticket. 65kph in a 50 kph.

However the signs along Burlington street do not have the units. I heard of a precidence being set in Toronto once.

This is a link to the law that says a sign has to have units either on the sign or below it.

Anyone else ever try this or know about it.

If this fails I'll try R. v. KENNEDY (1972) 7 CCC (2d) 42

The defense of necessity is available in strict liability offences such as speeding. I had to speed up and pass a certain collision event.

I'm not a new member, but Ive been hanging about long enough that a formal intro may be in order. Having driven quite a lot for fifty years, Ive had my share of tickets. None recently, but Ill be on the road today and you never know… Members of my immediate family have been or are Ontario police officers, but Im just a civilian.

Long ago I worked as a newspaper reporter and my duties included reporting from the courts. Like people who, having seen a packing plant in operation, wont eat sausage, I now would prefer to have nothing whatsoever to do with Ontario's legal system. As a motorist, though, Im involved in it every day. On this site I can see many different viewpoints about that system, presented in the civil way that the administrators work so hard to maintain.

Oh, and Ive often done my best to obstruct police officers.

Bear! Take your hand away from that holster, please! Its just that Ive been an enthusiastic rugby player over the years, and Ive whiled away many happy afternoons banging into other players, some of them cops. I love that game.

Hello, I came across this board after my 1st appearance in court last week. I'd be willing to share my experience in court with others on here and help out anyway I can. I'm no expert but after some research and discussion with paralegals, I've gained a bit of understanding on how to defend myself in court.. or atleast have a fair trial.

Great website!

I did see it earlier, racer, but didn't think anybody'd be all that interested in my details. It dawned on me only when I came back recently after a period of inactivity that I am, in a way, already part of the "family." Like a crazy old uncle who lives in the attic and is never mentioned, I occasionally come downstairs mumbling to myself and scaring the neighbours when they've only dropped by for a nice visit and to discuss the OHTA. So they might as well have some sense of who this person is.
