Accidentally Took A Right Turn At A Stopped School Bus

Unread post by newmansk »

I accidentally took a right turn not realizing there was a school bus stopped to the left of a 4 way stop (which I did stop at) letting kids off the bus. I didn't realize the school bus was stopped until i looked through my rear view mirror and saw there blockade sticking out. I didn't even notice the flashing lights. Nothing has happen yet but now I am concerned something will be coming in the mail.

Please advise on what might happen.

If I understand you correctly... (sorry if this sounds like I'm repeating what you said)

You approached a four-way stop. School bus was to your left and not in the intersection. You made a right turn at the intersection, and at no point did you overtake or go by the school bus in either direction, is that right? Or was the school bus in the oncoming traffic lane after you made the turn (ie you turned toward the bus and passed it going the other way)?

I did not overtake or pass the bus. It was on the street I was turning right on but it was on the other side of the intersection so I never passed it or overtook it.

The bus was near or at a 4 way stop as I was as well. The bus was at the stop sign as was I but they were on the left side of the intersection. The roads are 2 lanes (one way each way) so i was not next to the bus they were on another street.

It was at the 4 way stop where I took a right turn and I am thinking that I was to stop until the buses red lights stop flashing (even though I don't remember the lights flashing). But the bus was letting kids out and there yellow barricade was up when I looked through my rear view mirror.

I know its not easy to understand so feel free to ask any more questions you need from me.

Sounds like you did nothing wrong. Don't worry about it.

Section 175, Highway Traffic Act of Ontario: School Buses

Duty of drivers when school bus stopped

(11) Every driver or street car operator, when meeting on a highway, other than a highway with a median strip, a stopped school bus that has its overhead red signal-lights flashing, shall stop before reaching the bus and shall not proceed until the bus moves or the overhead red signal-lights have stopped flashing.

Idem

(12) Every driver or street car operator on a highway, when approaching from the rear a stopped school bus that has its overhead red signal-lights flashing, shall stop at least twenty metres before reaching the bus and shall not proceed until the bus moves or the overhead red signal-lights have stopped flashing.

So let me get this straight. As long as I am not passing or overtaking the bus I am not breaking the law? Even if the bus has its flashing lights on at a 4 way stop.
